Shwaso-Ojas – Safe Remedy for Rhinitis Problem

What is Rhinitis?

There are two types of rhinitis: allergic and non-allergic.

Allergic Rhinitis

If you have allergic rhinitis, your immune system mistakenly identifies a typically harmless substance as an intruder. This substance is called an allergen. The immune system responds to the allergen by releasing histamine and chemical mediators that typically cause symptoms in the nose, throat, eyes, ears, skin and roof of the mouth.

Seasonal allergic rhinitis (hay fever) is most often caused by pollen carried in the air during different times of the year in different parts of the country.

Allergic rhinitis can also be triggered by common indoor allergens such as the dried skin flakes, urine and saliva found on pet dander, mold, droppings from dust mites and cockroach particles. This is called perennial allergic rhinitis, as symptoms typically occur year-round.

In addition to allergen triggers, symptoms may also occur from irritants such as smoke and strong odors, or to changes in the temperature and humidity of the air. This happens because allergic rhinitis causes inflammation in the nasal lining, which increases sensitivity to inhalants.

Many people with allergic rhinitis are prone to allergic conjunctivitis (eye allergy). In addition, allergic rhinitis can make symptoms of asthma worse for people who suffer from both conditions.

Non-allergic Rhinitis

At least one third of people with rhinitis symptoms do not have allergies. Nonallergic rhinitis usually afflicts adults and causes year-round symptoms, especially runny nose and nasal congestion. This condition differs from allergic rhinitis because the immune system is not involved.

What are the symptoms of Rhinitis?

Some of the common symptoms of Rhinitis are:

  • Sneezing
  • Runny / stuffy / itchy nose
  • Coughing
  • Sore or scratchy throat
  • Itchy / watery eyes
  • Dark circles under the eyes
  • Frequent headaches

Causes

Common causes of chronic Rhinitis include:

  • Environmental or occupational irritants - Dust, smog, second-hand smoke or strong odors, such as perfumes, can trigger nonallergic rhinitis. Chemical fumes, such as those you might be exposed to in certain occupations, also may be to blame.

  • Weather changes - Temperature or humidity changes can trigger the membranes inside your nose to swell and cause a runny or stuffy nose.

  • Infections - A common cause of nonallergic rhinitis is a viral infection — a cold or the flu, for example.

  • Foods and beverages - Nonallergic rhinitis may occur when you eat, especially when eating hot or spicy foods. Drinking alcoholic beverages also may cause the membranes inside your nose to swell, leading to nasal congestion.

  • Hormone changes - Hormonal changes due to pregnancy, menstruation, oral contraceptive use or other hormonal condition such as hypothyroidism may cause non-allergic rhinitis.

Types of Rhinitis

Rhinitis always involves nasal swelling and a buildup of mucus, but there are different types, and they can last for different lengths of time.

The different types are:

  • Acute viral Rhinitis: Acute viral Rhinitis can be caused by a variety of viruses, usually the common cold.

  • Chronic Rhinitis: Chronic Rhinitis is usually an extension of rhinitis caused by inflammation or a viral infection.

  • Atrophic Rhinitis: Atrophic Rhinitis is a form of chronic rhinitis in which the mucous membrane thins (atrophies) and hardens, causing the nasal passages to widen (dilate) and dry out.

  • Vasomotor Rhinitis: Vasomotor Rhinitis is a form of chronic rhinitis. Nasal stuffiness, sneezing, and a runny nose—common allergic symptoms—occur when allergies do not seem to be present.

Recovery time depends on the type of Rhinitis.
