Amalaki, popularly called Amla, is a gooseberry of Indian origin.


It is light yellow in color and has five out of the six tastes recognized in the ancient Indian medical science, Ayurveda. These five tastes are sour, astringent, bitter, pungent and sweet. The Amalaki, fruit (Amla) is known to be the richest Vitamin C source, with its content ranging from 600-900 mg. per 100 gm. It also consists of rich minerals like calcium and iron. It is popular in Ayurveda for the wide variety of benefits it offers to human health.


Research has shown that Amalaki, being a natural anti-oxidant, inhibits change in oxidative stress levels which are evident in the process of aging. It acts as a nutrition to digestive tract and helps alleviate hyper-acidity providing a healthy digestive system. As a natural skin rejuvenator, it helps in cell-regeneration providing inner and outer skin care. Not just this, it also prevents cellular damage in liver and ensures its optimum functionality. It also cleanses and purifies blood.


It is also used as a home remedy for hair care by using its liquid extract along with coconut oil for the scalp in order to prevent greying of hair and hair loss.


Its scientific name is Emblica Officinalis.
