Ayurvedic Treatment Approach
Preventive and curative approach of Ayurveda
Perfect health, according to Ayurveda, is a balance between the body, mind, soul and social well being. What’s more, the twin concepts of connectedness and balance can be noticed throughout the Ayurvedic thought, texts and practice.
Much similar to all other holistic health systems, Ayurveda stresses the strong and unshakable connections between the mind, body and soul. However, the connectedness of Ayurveda extends even beyond the individual, reaching to the universe!
A few basic yet significant elements of the Ayurvedic treatment approach include:
- All the things that are part of the universe, living as well as nonliving, are connected together. In fact, almost everything in the universe is made of five gross natural elements namely air, water, space, fire and earth.
- A deep connection exists between the environment and the self.
- We are connected within ourselves, then to the people around us, followed by our immediate environment and ultimately, the universe. This balanced connectivity ascertains good health and well-being.
- We shall remain healthy provided we retain balance by interacting with our surrounding in a wholesome and effective way. However, our balance may be disrupted by our lifestyle. Our choice of diet, profession, exercise, and relationships is capable of creating physical, emotional and spiritual imbalances. Well, this imbalance results in a lack of harmony, making us more susceptible to illnesses.
- Human beings are duly responsible for their actions and choices. By making well balanced choices which promote harmony and connectivity, we can achieve as well as maintain good health.
Preventative treatment in Ayurveda
Ayurveda has developed a vivid analytical description of various stages and events taking place because the causative factors tend to operate till the final stages of a disease. This provides the system an added advantage of being aware of the possible onset of a disease much prior to the latent symptoms are apparent. This largely enhances this system’s preventive role by making it possible to take appropriate and effective step well in advance so as to prevent further progress of the disease or to take proper therapeutic precautions to curb the disease in its early stages.
Types of treatment in Ayurveda
- Purification treatment (Shodhana therapy)
- Palliative treatment (Shamana therapy)
- Diet and activity prescription (Pathya Vyavastha)
- Avoiding factors that cause disease or aggravate a disease (Nidan Parivarjan)
- Psychotherapy (Satvavajaya)
- Use of rejuvenation medicine and immuno-modulators (Rasayana therapy)
Diet and Ayurvedic treatment
As far as Ayurveda is concerned, diet regulation is considered as a therapy and is of great importance. This is mainly because Ayurveda considers this human body as a product of the food consumed. The mental and spiritual development of an individual as well as his or her temperament is highly influenced by the quality of food that is consumed by him or her. Food in the human body is first transformed into rasa or chyle and then the processes that follow involve its conversion into blood, fat, muscle, bone, bone marrow, various reproductive elements and ojas. Thus, food consumed is the basis of all metabolic transformations as well as life activities. According to Ayurveda, lack of nutrients or improper transformation of food results in a range of diseases.
Thus, Ayurveda attempts to prevent a disease by adopting a balanced lifestyle and when it comes to treatment, it indulges in finding and eliminating the root cause of the illness.
