Jatamansi (Latinname - Nardostachys jatamansi), is a flowering plant which is especially found in Himalayas. This is an intensely aromatic herb which is amber colored. Since ancient times, the oil of Jatamansi is used in perfumes, sedatives, herbal medicines and also in religious practices. It is known to reduce insomnia and birth difficulties. This is a very popular herb used since ancient times in Ayurveda and finds its mention in Charaka and Sushruta samhitas.


Jatamansi is light to digest, oily unctuous, bitter, astringent and sweet in taste. It has the quality of cold potency which has special effects on neuro-psychiatric conditions. It has properties to balance all the three doshas and especially pitta and kapha doshas.

  • Excess dosage of this medicine may cause nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.
