Kutki, botanically known as Picrorhiza Kurroa, is a perennial herb found in the Himalayan Ranges. It has been traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicinal system for the treatment of liver related disorders such as hepatitis. It enhances the functioning of liver by normalizing the enzymes present in it. Kutki roots are helpful in bile formation and removing out of the liver. The powdered form of its root when taken with honey can be useful in treating cirrhosis.
Due to its laxative property, it has also been used for treating digestive problems such as upset stomach. It is a good Ayurvedic remedy for constipation and helps attaining a healthy digestive system. Kutki has been used as an herbal remedy for curing vomiting as well. It is also a good dietary supplement for burning excess fat and not letting it build up in the body.
Apart from being hepato-protective, it has been used as herbal ghee, Mahatiktaka Ghrita, in curing skin diseases. It is known to improve eyesight as well. It also strengthens the immune system. Being purgative in nature, it should be carefully used. Children should be given only low doses and pregnant women are advised to avoid it or ask for medical advice and supervision.
