Loha or Lauha is the term referring to Iron. Lauha Bhasma is an Ayurvedic medicine. It is mineral-based and contains elemental micro fine iron particles prepared by calcination under high temperature.
Loha Bhasm or Lauha Bhasma is used in Ayurvedic treatment of diseases such as anaemia, eye disorders, skin diseases, general debility, spleen enlargement, liver enlargement and hiatus hernia etcetera. Purified iron is made into Loha Bhasma or Iron Ash by processing with herbal juices and then calcination under high temperature.
Purified iron is processed with herbal juices and then calcined under high temperature to make bhasma or iron ash. It affects Tridosha by balancing Kapha and Pitta dosha.
Usage of Lauha Bhasma
- It helps in the improvement of immunity, treating anaemia, liver enlargement, fat burning, impotency, weakness due to bleeding, spleen enlargement and hiatus hernia.
- Haematinic in nature, which means it increases haemoglobin levels.
- Helps in red blood cell formation, hence Haematogenic.
- It burns fat and acts as digestive stimulant.

- It works well for diseases related to muscles, heart, abdomen, blood, liver, etc.

- It is heavy to digest and coolant in nature.
Side Effects of Lauha Bhasma
Lauha Bhasma should be administered carefully. The dosage should be within 30 mg and not used for more than 45 days.
Side effects of Lauha Bhasma in certain conditions are:
- Symptoms of constipation may occur in weak people
- Rare case of diarrhoea may be seen
- Stomach upset or experiencing black stools
- Nausea
