Minerals and Metals – Ayurvedic Usage of Mandura Bhasm

Mandura Bhasma (also called Mandoor Bhasma) finds wide application in Ayurveda as a formulation used for the treatment of microcytic anaemia (iron deficiency anaemia). It is an ayurvedic formulation of calcined iron. It is also used for treating dysmenorrhoea, amenorrhea, haemolytic jaundice and spleen, and liver disorders.

Ferric oxide is the key ingredient of the Mandura Bhasma formulation. Herbs are used for processing it. The formulation is prepared by calcination at high temperature. It is endowed with a host of properties such as anthelmintic, hematogenic, hypo-glycemic, carminative and haematinic.


Usage of Mandura Bhasma

Mandura Bhasma is widely used for the treatment of metrorrhagia (excessive loss of blood), hepatomegaly (liver enlargement), splenomegaly (spleen enlargement), amenorrhoea, dysmenorrhoea, anaemia and anaemia caused by geophagia (earth eating).

Mandura Bhasma is also used for increasing appetite, general debility, rickets, chronic fever accompanied by restlessness and haemolytic jaundice.


Ayurvedic Properties of Mandura Bhasma

Mandura Bhasma is made with one part of old iron rust and four parts of Triphala Decoction. The mixture is then heated till all water evaporates and just powder is left behind, which is mixed with Aloe Vera juice and cow’s urine and ground. It is then dried and heated at high temperature. To get Mandura Bhasma, the process is carried out a couple of times. It is calcined to pacify Pitta and Kapha and increase its bioavailability in the human body.


  • Rasa (taste in the mouth):Kashaya (Astringent)

  • Guna (Action related to Pharmacology): Sheeta (Cool)

  • Virya (Potency): Sheeta (Cool in the potency)

  • Vipaka (Resultant): Katu (Pungent)

  • Prabhava (Dominant Impact): Haematinic


Side Effects of Mandura Bhasma

  • No side effect is observed if Mandura Bhasma is taken at a dosage of about 125 mg two times daily even for 6 months. However, the formulation taken at a dosage of about 250 mg two times daily should be taken with caution and for a short time.

  • The well-made formulation has no toxicity, but the raw formulation can cause toxicity and side effects such as altered taste in the mouth, blackish stool, iron overload.
