Manjistha termed as Rubia Cordifolia in Botany, is a highly recognized Ayurvedic herb. Its leaves and stem are the major parts that are used in various medicines. The leaves of this plant have five to seven nerves while the stems are slender and have four angles. The roots of this plant are brownish red in nature and give red dye. Winter season is considered to be the best time to use this herb.


Manjistha plant has umpteen internal and external benefits. It can be externally applied to cope up with skin diseases like oozing and ulcers. Ulcers and wounds when dressed with Manjistha Ghrita may promptly heal and dry up the affected area. Non chronic skin problems heal very quickly when treated with this herb. The ointment of Manjistha used for medication with Sat Dhauta Ghrita is very useful in dealing with erysipelas. Chronic skin wounds can be treated by applying decoction of Manjistha and then adding solid extract of rasakriya to it.


Manjistha is very helpful in dealing with gastrointestinal problems like loss of appetite, worm infestations and dyspepsia. It also works as an appetizer. Its consumption is also very helpful in purification of blood.
