Mishreya known in Botany by the name of Foeniculum Vulgare, is also called Indian sweet fennel. Generally, the seeds of fennel are used to add flavors to soups, sauces, meat dishes, some pickles and confectionery. Mishreya is counted in the pharmacopoeia of every country in the world. The Indian Herbal Pharmacopoeia and Pharmacopoeia of British have done the documentation of its spasmolytic and carminative properties.
This herb is very useful in relaxing muscles of stomach and also helps relieve gastrointestinal spasms. Due to this, it is considered as an effective herbal remedy for treating bloating and flatulence. It is also helpful in curbing constipation and cures an upset stomach by which abdominal cramps could be relieved. Those suffering from chronic irritable bowel syndrome should take fennel in the form of tea.
Mishreya is full of volatile oils like anethole and estragole which are helpful in promoting the digestive enzymes secretion in the stomach.
Essential fatty acids like fluids and other vitamins and minerals make it quite therapeutic. Fennel also helps ease menstrual cramps. Fennel is also used in Abana, Mentat and Mentat syrup. It is an ingredient of Mentat DS. To cure painful joints, volatile oils in fennel should be diluted as massage oils.
