Minerals and Metals – Ayurvedic Usage of Naga Bhasm

Naga Bhasma (also known as Sisaka Bhasma) is detoxified lead powder processed with an array of minerals and herbs such as neem, pipal tree bark, Calotropis Procera root, etc. It is used for the treatment of a host of diseases such as impotence, diabetes mellitus, urinary incontinence, etc.

The key ingredient present in Naga Bhasma is calcined lead, and the therapeutic efficacy of the formulation depends on its method of preparation. When prepared with Papaver Somnifera the formulation possesses aphoristic property.


Usage of Naga Bhasma

Naga Bhasma finds wide application in the treatment of frequent urination, spleen enlargement, impotence, diabetes mellitus, leucorrhoea, urinary incontinence, rheumatoid arthritis, pules, malabsorption syndrome, non-healing wounds, etc.

It is also used for treating ligament injury, haemorrhoids, chronic constipation, heartburn and acidity caused by a hiatus hernia, expectorating cough, gonorrhoea, bronchitis, emaciation, whooping cough, epilepsy, vomiting and spitting blood, skin diseases, helminthiasis, etc.


Ayurvedic Properties of Naga Bhasma

Shuddha Naga or detoxified and processed lead is the key ingredient of Naga Bhasma. An array of minerals and herbs is used for processing Naga Bhasma. The herbs used in the preparation of the formulation are nirgundi leaves, adhatoda Vasica leaves, neem, turmeric powder, etc.

Effect of the formulation on Tridosha: It balances Kapha (fluid balance), Pitta (bile), Vata (wind).


Side Effects of Naga Bhasma

  • You must take the formulation at a dosage of 62.5 to 125 mg for twice or once daily after or before food under medical supervision along with honey milk, ghee, or sugar to avoid side effects.

  • Self-medication must be avoided as it can be dangerous.

  • Over-dosage of the formulation can result in fatal side effects.

  • The medication must be avoided by children, lactating mothers, and pregnant women.

  • The formulation should be stored in a cool and dry place out of sight and reach of children.
