Pashanbhed is a lithotropic and diuretic drug that is commercially available and is used for treating renal problems. There are a number of plants known by the name Pashanbheda mainly because of their lithotropic and diuretic activities. However, one plant that is widely accepted for these activities is the Bergenia lingulata. This is a medicinal plant which is used for treating different types of ailments. It is found in the Himalayas and also in the Khasi Hills of Assam. Pashanbhed is also recommended for curing abdominal tumour, breaking up calculi and painful micturition.


Medicinal Properties of Bergenia Lingulata

The rhizomes of Pashanbhed are used mainly for inhibiting stone formations. There are a number of medicinal properties possessed by this plant and they are:


  • Antiuroholic
  • Diuretic
  • Hepatoprotective
  • Anti-diabetic
  • Blood pressure lowering activity
  • Antipyretic

Medicinal Uses of Pashanbhed

Pashanbhed is used in Unani and Ayurveda medicine system for the treatment of various diseases and especially urinary stones. The root of the plant has laxative, cooling, abortifacient, aphrodisiac and cooling properties. The roots of this plant are used for treating urinary discharges, vesicular calculi, bladder diseases, excessive uterine haemorrhage, menorrhagia, heart diseases, splenic enlargement and dysentery. Other medicinal uses of Pashanbhed include:


  • Roots of the plant can be rubbed and given with honey for children who are teething.
  • Wounds, boils, burns and cuts can be healed by using the dried root paste of Pashanbhed externally.
  • Pashanbhed juice or root paste can be taken orally for getting rid of intestinal parasites and roundworms.
  • The juice extracted from Pashanbhed leaves can be used in the form of an ear drop for curing earache.
  • The decoction of the fresh roots of Pashanbhed can be used for treating urinary disorders, urogenital disorders and stomach disorders.
  • Paste made out of the root of this plant can help in curing constipation.
  • Root powder of Pashanbheda is effective in treating fever.
