Minerals and Metals – Ayurvedic Usage of Sauvarchalam (Kala Namak)
Sauvarchalam is also referred to as Sochal salt. However, it is most commonly known as black salt. It has been in use since ancient times. It is a cooling spice and is most commonly used to treat digestive ailments. It is blackish-brown in colour. Sauvarchalam is composed of sodium chloride and traces of minerals like iron and magnesium and chemical compounds like sodium sulphate. It has a strong sulphurous flavour.
Usage of Sauvarchalam
Digestive Stimulant
Sauvarchalam balances the production of acids in the stomach and stimulates bile production. Therefore, it serves as a digestive stimulant and increases appetite as well.
Haematinic
It increases the haemoglobin levels in the body, owing to the presence of iron compounds. It is hence used in the treatment of anaemia
Anti-Flatulent
Because of its anti- flatulence property, it helps in relieving abdominal heaviness and gas.
They are also used in the treatment of joint disorders, diabetes, muscle spasm, and respiratory diseases. Sauvarchala has insignificant amounts of potassium, magnesium, and other minerals that are good for the heart.

- Vibandha – Helps in relieving constipation
- Gulma – Helps with Bloating and abdominal tumours
- Udgara Shodhi – Relieves belching and clears throat
- Laghu – Easy to digest
Side Effects of Sauvarchalam
Sauvarchalam is safe when the intake is well within the prescribed dietary dose. However, it is believed that the consumption of black salt should not go over 6 grams a day. Sauvarchala, when used for medicinal purpose, is always combined with other herbs. It is always safe to stick to the prescribed dose.
