Shalparni being one of the Dashamoola herbs is considered one of the most important Ayurvedic herbs which is used as an ingredient in numerous medicines. The leaves of Shalparni resembles the leaves of Shaala hence it is also called as Shaalparni. It is a sub-tropical and perennial herb which grows in dry hilly regions. The herb has a soothing, sedative effect which balances neurological imbalances. It has unique properties which can regulate the nervous systems, venous and arterial systems.


Charaka has classified this herb in different groups- A group of herbs relieves myalgia, Anti-inflammatory group of herbs, Group of herbs which improve strength and immunity, group of herbs used in oleation, group of herbs with sweet taste. The herb has also extensive mentions in Susruta Samhita as well. Root, bark and leaves of Shalparni are used in medicinal preparations. The herb is also used in African countries in traditional folk medicines.


Shalparni is sweet, bitter, heavy to digest, unctuous, oily and has hot potency. It balances all the tridoshas in the body.

Medicinal uses of Shalparni:

  • The herb is very useful in reliving vomiting sensation, fever and nausea.
  • Useful in treating dyspnoea, chronic respiratory disorders, asthma, bronchitis and other diseases related to the lungs.
  • It reduces dysentery and diarrhea.
  • It relives burning sensation, bloating and gastritis.
  • Considered the Dashamoola herb has anti-inflammatory properties which is a very useful medicine in postpartum care.
  • It aids in improving the immunity and increase in healthy weight.
  • Used to treat the imbalances caused due to Vata dishes, especially in heart diseases.
  • Also used to treat kidney disorders, kidney stones and postpartum complications.
  • Used in removing dampness and heat from the liver and gall bladder.
  • Useful in treating convulsions.
