The tiny erect shrub Swarnpatri, with Botanical name of Cassia Angustifolia, goes 2 to 3 feet high. The pale green stem of Swarnpatri and smooth but erect. It is also called Indian senna in English. Swarnpatri is very helpful in decreasing pitta and lets vata move freely in the body. This herb is helpful to stimulate liver so that the enzymes are secreted properly in the body.
It is also helpful in lowering the bowels and increasing peristaltic movement in the intestines. It is also useful in purification of blood and restoration of metabolic imbalance that occurs due to indigestion. By crushing the fruits and leaves of Swarnpatri, a powder is prepared which is quite useful in helping digestion and curbing constipation. To relieve pain in gout, osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis, it is very useful.
This herb is also used for cough, in dressing wounds, and is carminative, antidysentric and laxative. To treat splenomegaly, hepatomegaly, diseases like malaria, skin diseases, jaundice anemia and loss of appetite, this herb proves quite handy. The mucilage content in Swarnpatri is helpful in decreasing fluid absorption in body and hence enhances laxation.
It is dark brown colored powder and has characteristic odor with a little bitter taste.
