Minerals and Metals – Ayurvedic Usage of Tamra Bhasma

Tamra Bhasma is an Ayurvedic medicine used for treating cancer, tumors, anemia, liver diseases, liver enlargement, obesity, hiccup, acidity with indigestion, and many more medical conditions. It is prepared from copper.

Dosha karma or the effect on three dosha by Tamra is that it reduces Kapha dosha and detoxifies Pitta dosha. Tamra stimulates the proper flow of Pitta dosha and pacifies it.

Preparing Tamra Bhasma is also crucial. Fine particles of elemental copper treated with herbal juices are processed under very high temperature to produce Tamra Bhasma or copper calx.


Usage of Tamra Bhasma

Tamra Bhasma mainly functions on liver, spleen, intestines, stomach, muscles, and skin. It also stimulates secretion of bile from the liver and gall bladder and thus increases peristaltic movements, stimulates appetite, and eases the digestion process.

Tamra Bhasma is also used in case of gall bladder stone and the pain related to it. It also comes to use while treating patients suffering from indigestion and abdominal distension along with acidity. The Bhasma stimulates appetite, cures abdominal distension, and rectifies acid production.


Ayurvedic Properties of Tamra Bhasma

The Ayurvedic properties of Tamra Bhasma are as follows:


  • Rasa (taste in the mouth):Kasaya (Astringent), Madhura (Sweet) Tikta (Bitter) Amal(Sour)

  • Guna (Action related to Pharmacology): Laghu (Light) Ruksha (Dry) Tikshna (Sharp)

  • Virya (Potency): Ushna (Hot)

  • Vipaka (Resultant): Katu (Pungent)


Side Effects of Tamra Bhasma

Tamra Bhasma should be administered carefully. The dosage should be within 30 mg and not used for more than 45 days.

Side effects of Tamra Bhasma in certain conditions are:

  • Nose bleed

  • High blood pressure

  • Anal fissure

  • Vertigo

  • Nausea



It is likely to be unsafe and contradictory with certain patients and children under five years. Proper medical supervision is necessary.
