Tejpatra is a tree native to India, China, Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan. The tree bears aromatic leaves which are used for medical and culinary purpose. The herb is believed to be widely in use by the Greeks and Romans and they believed that it symbolizes wisdom, peace and protection.


The leaves taste pungent and have a bitter flavor which are used either in fresh or dried forms. The oil extracted from Tejpatra is used to cure numerous ailments. Leaf, Bark and Oil of Tejpatra are the used parts of this plant. Leaves of Tejpatra cannot be consumed directly due to its bitter taste, but can be used as a flavoring agent in a number of dishes. The leaf of Tejpatra is a very common ingredient in the Moghul cuisines. The essential oils extracted from Tejpatra are used in perfumes and also as a repellant of flies, moths, mice, etc. Tejpatra has anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal, diuretic and astringent properties.
