Trivrit (Operculina turpethum)

Trivrit is called Operculina turpethum in Botany. Its majority chemical constituent are A and B – Turpethins. Scopoletin and Turpethinic acids A are also its ingredients. Turpethin properties can be seen in it.


There are two kinds of Trivrit viz. Shyama (means black) and Shukla (means white). Trivrit is usually found across India at the boundaries of farms and on roadsides of highways. Among many Ayurvedic herbs that are useful for easy purgation, Trivrit can be considered the best owing to its properties like strength, piercing and pungent nature. It is thus very useful in losing body weight.


It is useful to get relief from worm infestation, constipation and healing infected wounds.


Shleshmodara is one of the types of Trivrit that is useful in ascites. While Shophahara is another type, which is useful in fighting inflammation, it also works as administer in severe fever.


Apart from all these benefits, it is also said to be helpful in anemia, abdominal tumors, and ulcers. Researchers are also working on the possibility of its ability to curb cancer tumors. It may also contain some anti-rheumatic agents.
