Vansh (Bamboosa arundinacea)

Vansh is one herb that is fairly mentioned in all the ancient scriptures relating to the Ayurveda. It works best in the form of a tonic, febrifuge and blood purifier. It also helps in alleviating cough, bronchial asthma, tuberculosis and burning micturation. This plant grows in the forests of the southern and the western parts of India. It is a 15 to 30 meters tall and erect tree that is thorny and grows up to an elevation of 1500 to 2000 meters. It is hollow between joints and its leaves are sheathing. The flowers of this plant appear in bunches are the fruits resemble yava fruits. Bamboosa arundinacea is the botanical name of Vansh which is also called Vamsa. It contains 90% silica or silicon, potash, alumina, lime and vegetable matter.


Medicinal Uses of Vansh

There are a number of health problems that can be eradicated with the use of Vansh and they are as follows:


  • It is used for treating back pains, joint pains and other inflammatory conditions. The laxative properties of Vansh make it helpful for ulcers, wounds and inflammations.
  • It possesses astringent properties and is therefore effective in treating infantile epilepsy.
  • Bamboosa arundinacea can also be used in the form of an Abortifacient for kidney problems.
  • It is also used for strengthening the cartilage in osteoporosis and osteoarthritis and for general movement.
  • Paste made out of the roots of Vansh can be used for alleviating a number of skin conditions like skin discolorations.
  • The sprouts of this plant are effective in dressing and healing wounds.
  • The burnt ash derived from its roots can be used for treating premature loss of hair and ringworm infestations.
  • Decoction made from the sprouts of this plant can be beneficial in treating dyspepsia, worms and anorexia.
