Yashtimadhu (Liquorice), botanically known as Glycyrrhiza glabra, is a herbal plant native to India and southern part of Europe. Its root, Liquorice, has been traditionally used in Ayurveda for rejuvenation. It tastes very sweet due to the presence of glycyrrhizin.
Its major benefits include strengthening the immune system and bringing down cholesterol level. It offers a wide range of benefits to human health and thus has a significant role in Ayurvedic science as a medicinal herb. Some of the benefits of Yashtimadhu are:
- It is known to cure disorders related to the respiratory tract such as cough and sore throat. Due to its expectorant nature, it is also effective in case of asthma, chest infections and chronic bronchitis as well.
- Liquorice is an anti-oxidant which makes it ideal for keeping control on cholesterol level and delaying oxidation so that walls of arteries don’t get hardened up.
- Yashtimadhu is also used as a mild laxative which helps in getting rid of pain and uneasiness caused due to acidic action in stomach. It cures ulcers and also stimulates bile formation to keep liver clean.
- It is a well known herb for enhancing and attaining a healthy reproductive system.
