Yavakshara is an Ayurvedic medicine that is used for treating urinary diseases, bloating, abdominal pain, and many more. Yavakshara is also used in many medicines as an ingredient. It is an alkali preparation made with the whole plant of Hordeum Vulgare or barley.

This Ayurvedic ingredient is also referred by various terms such as Yavksar, JavKshar, JavKsar, Yavaksaram, Yavaja, Yavashukaja, Yavaha, Yavya, Yavagraja Pakya, PakyaKshara and more.

It is also used as an ingredient in Ayurvedic medicines such as Guggulutiktakam Kashayam, Indukantam Ghritam, Shothari Lauh, etc. and also used in the treatment of haemorrhoids.


Usage of Yavakshara

Yavakshara is used in the treatment of difficulty in urination and urinary calculi. Also bloating, as cites, and abdominal pain are treated by it. The disease for which Yavksar is used are:

Heart disease, anemia, malabsorption syndrome (IBS), enlargement of spleen, constipation, obstruction in the throat, coughing and piles of Slaismika variety.

This formulation induces perspiration and acts as a diuretic. Yavakshara balances Vata and Kapha doshas and is very beneficial in non-cancerous prostate enlargement.

  • Rasa (taste in the mouth): Madhura (Sweet)

  • Guna (Action related to Pharmacology): Ruksa, Mrdy, Aguru

  • Virya (Potency): Sheeta (Cold)

  • Vipaka (Resultant): Katu

  • Prabhava (Dominant Impact): Kaphapittahara, Lekhana, Medohara, Medhyavardhaka, Vrsya, Vrnavardhaka


Side Effects of Yavakshara

Yavakshara should be avoided in high Pitta conditions, bleeding disorders, as it is strong, hot, and piercing in nature. Since it is alkaline or Kshara, men seeking infertility treatment should avoid it. It may affect the quality and quantity of sperm production. Higher dosage may cause a burning sensation. Yavakshara is not ideal for medicinal use to people with excessive tiredness, emaciation, and underweight.
