Obesity means accumulation of too much of body fat. Obesity is different from being overweight, which means just weighing more than normal. The body weight may come from muscle, bone, fat, and/or hydration. In general, both these terms mean that a person's weight is greater than what is considered normal for his or her height.


In general, obesity occurs over time when someone consumes more calories than what is used in body functions. The balance between calories-in and calories-out differs for each individual. Factors that might affect one's weight include the genetic makeup, overeating, eating high-fat foods, and not being physically active.


Being obese increases the risk of diabetes, heart disease, stroke, arthritis, and some types of cancer. If you are obese, losing even 5 to 10 percent of your weight can delay or prevent some of these diseases.
