What is Anxiety Disorder?

Anxiety is a common condition noticed in people of all age groups. It may be caused by a physical condition, mental condition, effects of drugs or due to a combination of these.

The common types of anxiety include: Panic disorder, Generalized Anxiety Disorder or GAD, Phobic disorders, Obsessive compulsive disorder or OCD, separation anxiety and stress disorders.

Causes of Anxiety Disorder

There are many external factors that may contribute to anxiety. These include: stress from school, stress in a personal relationship, stress at work, financial stress, stress that results from an emotional trauma such as the loss of a loved one, victimization by crime, a natural disaster, sexual abuse or physical abuse, side effects of medication, stress form a serious illness, intoxication with an illicit drug like amphetamines or cocaine, noticing symptoms of a severe medical illness, and lack of oxygen (as a result of emphysema, pulmonary embolism, altitude sickness)

However, the good news is that no matter what the reason of anxiety is, one can manage or handle it effectively. Conversely, if ignored, anxiety can become devastating and unmanageable.

On top of this, our lifestyle and food habits make our nerves week from both structural as well as functional point of view. The safest way of coming out of such a situation is to nourish our nervous health so that it responds constructively to otherwise difficult situation in life.

Causes of Stress

There can be many symptoms associated with anxiety, some of the common ones are as follows:

  • Particular obsessions over stressful issues
  • Sleeping troubles
  • Feeling tense, jittery, restless or dizzy
  • Difficult focusing on anything else except a stressful matter
  • Being over cautious about everything
  • Not being able to concentrate
  • Being startled easily
  • Fluctuations in appetite
  • Having an omnipresent feeling of approaching disaster or danger

If symptoms become severe and increase in frequency and intensity, without any delay, the patient has to seek medical help.

Anxiety Treatment

In several cases, anxiety can be treated at home without visiting a physician. Of course, these are restricted to anxiety attacks that are acute and in which you know the cause, it goes away naturally, and the cause can be immediately eliminated. For instance, you may feel anxious about a final exam, a pending job interview or performance on a stage. In such situations, stress gets relieved by actions such as:

  • Meditation
  • Listening to spiritual talks or reading spiritual books
  • Talking with a positive and supporting person
  • Visualizing yourself successfully addressing and conquering the particular fear factor
  • Taking a long warm bath
  • Relaxing in a dark room
  • Performing deep breathing exercises

Medical Treatment for Anxiety

Medical treatment for anxiety mainly depends on the root cause of the problem. If anxiety is a result of a physical ailment, treatment involves eliminating the ailment. For instance, if the thyroid gland is being over-active and is causing anxiety, treatment may involve thyroid-regulating medications and surgery.

When the root cause is psychological in nature, the underlying case has to be identified and controlled or eliminated if possible. For instance, if anxiety is caused due to a marital problem, the doctor may suggest the patient to marital counselling.

There are times when the cause cannot be discovered. In such situations, the only treatment option is trying to control the symptoms. A few decades ago, anxiety was treated with benzodiazepines. However, this class of medications is presently not used much because of high possibility of addiction. Psychotherapy might prove helpful to cure anxiety. Cognitive therapy and behavioural therapy are the most common psychotherapeutic approaches used to treat anxiety. Helping the patient combat his or her underlying unrealistic beliefs is cognitive therapy and finding and developing way to manage stress and worries is behavioural therapy.
